Thistle & Thyme

Notes from a small garden, written slowly.

About This Journal

Thistle & Thyme began as a handful of scribbled notes about tomatoes that refused to ripen and herbs that grew wild despite every instruction in every book. Over time, those notes turned into something more consistent: a quiet record of what actually works in a modest, often stubborn backyard plot. This is not a place for perfect gardens. It is a place for the ones that are a little messy, a little experimental, and mostly alive. Here you will find observations on soil, seasons, and the small creatures that visit uninvited, along with the occasional lesson learned the hard way.

Soil First

Before anything else, there is dirt. Good gardens start underground, with compost, earthworms, and patience. We talk about building soil that holds water without drowning roots, and why a handful of healthy earth smells faintly sweet.

Seasonal Rhythms

Every garden has its own calendar. We follow the slow turn from frost to blossom, noting which vegetables sulk in early spring and which herbs seem to thrive on neglect once the summer heat settles in.

Small Creatures

Bees, beetles, and the occasional curious toad all have opinions about how a garden should be run. We write about coexisting with them, mostly peacefully, and the small dramas that unfold among the leaves.
